Paphos Archaeological Park
The finest Roman mosaics in the eastern Mediterranean, laid out under open sky beside Paphos harbour. This UNESCO-listed park is the heart of the ancient city, and its showpieces are four grand Roman villas — the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus, Aion and Orpheus — whose floors are carpeted in astonishingly intact 2nd- and 3rd-century mosaics: hunting scenes, gods, a tipsy Dionysos, a whole mythological comic strip picked out in coloured stone. Beyond the villas the site rambles on to an odeon, an agora and a lighthouse, the sea always in the corner of your eye. Raised walkways keep you above the art. Give it half a day.
