Ledra Street & the crossing
The strangest short walk in Europe: a busy pedestrian shopping street in the middle of Nicosia that simply stops at a UN checkpoint, then carries on under a different flag. For decades a barricade sealed it — the physical symbol of the divided capital — until the crossing finally opened in 2008. Today you show your passport, walk a few metres through the buffer zone, and you're in North Nicosia: different coffee, different script on the shopfronts, the same island underneath. Whichever side you start from, it's the most vivid way to feel what the Green Line actually means on the ground.
