Kolossi Castle
A single honey-coloured keep standing in citrus groves west of Limassol — small, perfectly square, and thick with history. Built by the Crusaders and long held by the Knights of St John, Kolossi ran a medieval sugar industry on the plain around it and gave its name to Commandaria, the sweet amber wine still made in the hills nearby and reckoned among the world's oldest named wines. Climb the narrow stair through three storeys to the battlements for a view across the vineyards to the sea; beside the keep stand the ruins of the old sugar mill. Quick to visit, but a proper slice of Crusader Cyprus.
